Project methodology

For the assessment of the research need in economics, the individual activities of the scientific team are linked in a multi-level process using surveys, workshops and questionnaires. Based on the fundament of theoretical and empirical assessments of sustainability concepts in economics, and research on economic sustainability, topics for the primary and the follow-up workshops as well as a questionnaire to be distributed among German economists are being developed. In preparation for the workshops a survey of relevant literature, looking especially at promising research approaches, has taken place. These surveys are summarized in the workshop background papers. Workshop proceedings are compiled summarizing the expert lectures and evaluating the discussions. Parallel to the basic workshops, an empirical study that reviews research topics and projects funded in the area of economic sustainability research has been carried out for Germany and evaluated on the basis of different criteria (e.g. sustainability dimensions, spatial level, institutions that supply funding). It gives an overview of the emphasis to the research on economic sustainability in Germany ("research landscape"). A survey of economists is used to identify possible future research topics. This survey is also used to document the scientific divide within economic science in Germany, which was one of the starting points within the project.

The "promising areas of sustainability research" determined through the workshops and the survey will be consolidated gradually into groups of problems and problem areas and will feed into a matrix made up of
  • "sustainability problems" with social action relevance and
  • "cross-sectional problems and requirements" with scientific and political relevance.
This synthesis of the results from the Workshops and the survey will be supported by research in specific topics.
